John Carpenter keeps it strictly retro for the soundtrack to his latest instalment in the Halloween franchise. Knowing what made the original movie, and indeed its iconic soundtrack, so successful, there’s no doubt that less is more, and that’s the key here.
Beyond a few flourishes of industrial noise or drone metal guitars, this soundtrack could be from any time in the last 45 years; the simple piano motif that defined a genre makes its foreboding presence felt throughout here.
While casual listeners might find the overall listen a bit sparse, there’s no doubt it’s the perfect soundtrack to a Halloween party, or indeed a Halloween Movie™️.
It might not be re-writing the rulebook, but when the rulebook you wrote is so simply effective in the first place, why change it?
