Track Of The Day 13/9 – Saint Clair

'I'll Stay'

Saint Clair is the work of French-speaking North Londoner Emma Topolski, the name itself a nod to her Scottish heritage.

Songwriting of a pristine vintage, the deep roots of her music are matched to a forward-facing dynamic, matching classicism – think The Beatles, Neil Young – to the soporific soul of James Blake, say, or Frank Ocean.

New EP 'D2' is out now, and to celebrate its release Clash is able to share new song 'I'll Stay'.

The vocal strains against its limitations, the lyrics speaking starkly about the need to retain control.

A balance of beautiful melody and suppressed feeling, 'I'll Stay' is one of Saint Clair's most succinct, moving vocals yet.

She explains: “'I'll Stay' is about wrestling with your demons, trying to keep a sometimes irresistible urge under control. But also about hope and the promise of victory.”

Tune in now.
