Since your first release back in 2013 you’ve built up a really impressive catalogue of achievements, releasing on the likes of DFTD and Noir Music – what’s the secret behind your rapid rise to success?
To be honest I’ve never really looked at it as any sort of formula. I have a place where I want to be in the industry and know in order to even attempt getting there its going to take a lot of hard work. I give myself personal goals every now and then which really test me just so I know personally I’m putting in the work that is needed and expected. I am in the studio every spare minute I have trying to learn something new and try to finish at least one track every week (whether anyone hears it is a different matter).

If I’m not working in some manner on music then I feel like I’m slacking so I can be pretty hard on myself. At the end of the day this is my dream and I’m very fortunate for the opportunity so I have to give it my all to try have a fair crack at it. To release on such amazing labels does give you confidence in the studio too and they are all really helpful and have taken me under their wing and nurtured me through.

The track we’re streaming here is ‘Reachin’’ – can you tell us a little bit about the inspiration behind the track? And in fact the name behind the whole EP, ‘Consequence of Society’…

‘Reachin’ came about after a gig I played in Strasbourg. I was playing a few darker tracks and just wanted to drop a more peak time track which would still fit in with those dark records I’m loving at the moment so decided to make one of my own. I travelled home listening to a lot of music on the plane and went straight into the studio when I got in. The track pretty much wrote itself, especially the arrangement. Hopefully it will sound good in all sorts of venues and be the type of track which really gets the dance floor going.

The name behind the EP has been influenced by quite a few different factors. First and foremost, with it being an actual series of releases, I wanted to write all sorts of music as I enjoy producing different styles and felt the title needed to show this. So ‘Consequence Of Society’ basically means to me that the music I am producing and playing out is a consequence of the society I was brought up in, and the nightclubs I attend and DJs I enjoy watching. Secondly all my close friends and even my Dad call me ‘Cos’ as my surname is Costigan so its fitting that the first letter of each word spells the nickname out. On the back of this I have also started a mix series on my Soundcloud under the same banner and future projects I have in the pipeline will also be under this name; but that’s all I can say about them at the moment.

What else have you got coming up?
After this I have an EP on Hot Since 82’s ‘Knee Deep In Sound’ which I’m really excited about and also a remix of Junior Jack – E Samba coming out with Maya Jane Coles and Mark Knight also on the package. I have a track coming out on Kerri Chandler’s MadTech imprint too. I’m finishing up an EP for Skream and also working on something with Defected amongst others.

Any summer plans as of yet?
Summer will be no different I’m guessing. Working hard in the studio at home in Newcastle then away playing gigs around the UK and Europe. I will be playing Amnesia in Ibiza a few times for Defected, so no doubt that will turn in to a few days extra partying and checking out as many DJ’s as possible at other clubs too. It’s always a great place for inspiration.
