But have they sampled Pixies?

Janelle Monae and Miguel have paired up on new track 'PrimeTime' - listen to it below.

When is a sample not a sample? Recently, similarities between Robin Thicke's 'Blurred Lines' and Marvin Gaye's 'Got The Give It Up' resulted in a court case, with songwriting credits at stake.

Now a similar discussion has arisen around a new collaboration between Janelle Monae and Miguel. Pairing two of the most blistering talents in R&B, 'PrimeTime' is a sparse cut which fuses Monae's soulful touch with Miguel's smooth flow.

The ghostly vocals in the backing are clearly a reference towards 'Where Is My Mind?' by Pixies, but - as Pitchfork report - it's definitely not a sample. A 're-creation' of the 'Surfer Rosa' classic, it shares Pixies' ghostly, unearthly feel but is rooted in a primeval groove.
