With The Magnetic North, Tame Impala and Sigur Rós...
Clash Gigs Of The Week - 24th June

The Magnetic North @ Islington Assembly Hall, London, Monday 24th

Tonight’s gig at Islington Assembly Hall sees ethereal trio The Magnetic North bring not only their heavenly sounds, but also a film screening to north London. ‘Hunting For Remoteness’, the band’s debut film, documents their visit to the vast landscapes of Orkney and will act as the perfect appetiser to their strings-and-brass-heavy gig. If you like a few more beats in your ambience, you can listen to Kid Harpoon’s remix of TMN’s debut album ‘Orkney: Symphony For The Magnetic North’ right here.

Jimmy Cliff @ The Plug, Sheffield, Monday 24th

Jimmy Cliff’s studio albums now tally well into the 30s, and the reggae icon shows no signs of slowing. Cliff spreads relentless good vibes wherever he goes, and this week he’s taking them to Sheffield, with a Shepherd’s Bush Empire gig the following night. Since the release of ‘Rebirth’ last year, Jimmy’s legacy has been revived and he’s played to sold-out crowds all over the world. The sincerity and love in his songs is irresistible, and Sheffield is sure to lap it up.

Tame Impala @ Hammersmith Apollo, London, Tuesday 25th

Still not sure which festival to hit this summer? Just have a scroll through Tame Impala’s tour schedule, as it’s sure to whet your appetite. The Australian psych-merchants are hitting UK shores just twice this summer, with shows at the Hammersmith Apollo and Glastonbury, but they are owning the global festival circuit. Joining them this week, Parisian dream Melody’s Echo Chamber will be warming up the crowd with some blissful tunes.

Fat Freddy’s Drop @ Village Underground, London, Wednedsay 26th

Celebrating the release of their third studio album, ‘Blackbird’, New Zealand seven-piece Fat Freddy’s Drop will dominate Village Underground’s intimate stage this week for their album launch party. The show is already sold out, but you can watch the whole gig from the comfort of your laptop via the band’s YouTube channel. It’s the band’s only scheduled UK show until October, but if you’re lucky you might be able to catch them playing in-store at Rough Trade East the evening before.

Sigur Rós @ The Eden Sessions, Cornwall, Sunday 30th

Shockingly, tickets are still available to see Sigur Rós play at the Eden Sessions later this week. With something for everyone, this year the Eden Sessions features performances from these Icelandic post-rockers, plus The xx, Kaiser Chiefs and Jessie J, with Daughter and Willy Mason completing the Sigur Rós bill. Taking place at the Teletubby-come-botanical-spaceship that is the Eden Project, the impressive surroundings are sure to enhance Sigur Rós’ dramatics.
