The best ways to open a DJ set...

Dubfire is one of the most sought after producers in the game, an artist who has linked with just about every influential label worth mentioning.

Landing on the inimitable Crosstown Rebels for the very first time this February, he's lined up something very, very special.

Trading production blows with Carl Craig, the two beat makers provide an astonishing platform for Australian vocalist Kate Elsworth.

'Lotus' is the result, and it's a deft, continually evolving piece of club-focussed electronics, charging head-long towards the unknown.

Dubfire comments...

“Being one of my favourite DJs, Damian has been a good friend for years, who also happens to run one of the most ground-breaking record labels out there. Not only have I always wanted to do something for the label, but also with my mentor Carl Craig. This was hatched on a sunny January day in Los Angeles and features the beautiful voice of Australian Kate Elsworth, something a bit deeper than I am known for, but just as emotionally powerful.”

Captivated by the project, Clash caught up with Dubfire to discuss the best ways to open a DJ set in Starter For Five...

DJ Metatron - 'If Only My Love Could Set You Free'

One of the most beautiful pieces of electronic dance music I’ve ever heard!

Produced by Traumprinz, I first heard it during a mushroom fueled trip to Joshua Tree with a good friend who had stumbled upon it by accident. We had it on repeat for hours; getting deeper and deeper into the building, looping orchestral melodies with each play. The breakbeat groove also makes it different than anything else out there.

And it’s SO good it can also be played as a closing song!

Chris Liebing ft. Aleen - 'No Regrets (The Friend Pt. 2)' [Dubfire Remix]

Chris has been a dear friend and inspiration for nearly two decades now. We’ve shared the DJ booth on many occasions, plus good times and laughs on many more; but we’ve never collaborated on any music together. So the door is wide open now with this special remix I concocted for his amazing Burn Slow project.

The minute I listened through the entire album, I was immediately drawn to 'No Regrets' and could instinctively hear the finished result in my head. What came out has exceeded my wildest creative imagination and stand - in my humble opinion - as one of the best things I've ever done.

Shao - 'Bubble'

There’s been a huge resurgence of the classic ‘electronic body music’ sound I was heavily into in the late 80’s / early 90’s; specifically the stuff coming out of Belgium.

I was opening many of my sets in 2019 with this brooding gem which - when supported by lots of smoke and flashing lighting - instantly creates a unique atmosphere and tension in the room, building the necessary excitement at the start of my sets.

ENØS - 'Neptune'

Hailing from Stockholm, this featured in nearly every set of mine in 2019, most notably at the start. With it’s long, spaced out intro and beautiful melodic stabs which build into a monster beat, it whips the crowd into a frenzy each and every time.

Four Tet - 'You Are Loved'

I love Kieran’s work for how incredible diverse and varied his sound is but I especially love his emotive, melodic material.

This one is from his incredible 'New Energy' album and I would often open my all night sets with it as it sets the perfect tone.
