Life At 140 #6

The month in Grime...

The start of 2013, as in sync with the end of 2012, has delivered a shed load of new music from some of gGrime's biggest hitters. New singles from JME & Wiley, MIK and Kozzie have all surfaced whilst new, much-anticipated instrumental EPs from K1 and Spooky are also pencilled in for releases over the next few weeks. January also saw the release of Pulse X Remixes from great new start-up Liminal Sounds, with the Blackwax and Pedro 123 reworks of Youngstar's seminal classic raising a few eyebrows in particular. Rude Kid has also been busy warming up for his new EP 'What The Hell?' by providing a mix for the Sonic Router x Uncle Albert series in which he premiered a whole host of new material, all of which we can expect to be hearing over the next few months.

Elsewhere, as the countdown to Butterz 3rd birthday party at Cable continues, the label announced their first release of 2013 in the shape of Flava D's debut record 'Hold On' / 'Home'. She will also make her Butterz debut on February 23rd as part of the birthday celebrations alongside Joker, Swindle, Lil Silva, Elijah & Skilliam, Royal-T, Champion and Terror Danjah. For those outside the capital, new grime-focused club night 'One Forty' launches at Dogma in Nottingham on January 29th with Preditah and K1.

In the clubs, Oh91's rework of Kahn and Neek's 'Percy' has been the standout track of the month, whilst Keysound's Wen has continued to make serious waves with the heavyweight 'Commotion'.

Top 5 Tracks of the Month:

Spooky – Electric Fence
Forthcoming on his Coolie Joyride EP on Oil Gang, this is Spooky at his unrelenting best. Unbelievably tough.

AUDIO: Preview 'Electric Fence' as part of the Coolie Joyride EP.

Kahn & Neek – Percy (Oh91's Percy)
If the original wasn't big enough, Bristol's Oh91 has given one of 2012's biggest records an incredible rework. Words don't really do it justice.

AUDIO:

MIK feat Kozzie and Trilla – Cak£
MIK has been consistently good for the last 12 months and Cak£ is the latest in a long line of singles that suggest mainstream success isn't too far away. DOK is superb on the instrumental too.

AUDIO:

JME & Wiley – Banger

Released on New Year's Day, 'Banger' is classic JME and Wiley. Listen out for the 'original skengman warriors' bar.

AUDIO:

Youngstar – Pulse X (Pedro 123 Remix)
As mentioned earlier, this is my personal favourite of the 5 remixes of Youngstar's 8-bar classic Pulse X offered up by Liminal Sounds. Really polished.
