A few weeks ago Clash was invited to check out a new artist.
Arriving at the London venue, though, it was clear that word was already out on Samm Henshaw. Fans crammed into the Hoxton Bar & Kitchen, a lengthy queue of lucky ticket holders stretching the length of the venue.
After squeezing through, Clash was met by a wonderfully dextrous, mature performance from the 20 year old Londoner. Samm's voice is smooth - putting the soul back into neo-soul - and supple, shifting from gentle whispers to no small measure of grit in the blink of an eye.
Backed by a whip-smart live band, the material was truly allowed to breathe. Steeped in classic songwriting, the rising talent is able to blend these influences into something quite special; hinting at the old, while embracing the new.
Thankfully, the evening was recorded for posterity. Clash is able to premiere a live recording of 'Only Wanna Be With You', and it's a sweet insight into how special Samm is.
Shuffling across that fluid rhythm section, the Londoner's gleeful delivery can move from a whisper to a gritty roar in the blink of an eye, always taking the audience with in.
Truly expressing his character, this is something very exciting indeed:
