Touring tips from a well-travelled musician...
Hayes Carll

Hayes Carll has been around the block a few times.

Born in America, the Grammy-nominated songwriter has released five studio albums, travelling the world in the process.

Throw in a six month stint in Croatia back in 2000 and you've got a wealth of experience to draw on.

New album 'Lovers And Leavers' is out now, following a quick fire five day studio session in Los Angeles.

Rough hewn but with a romantic streak, the Texan troubadour is packing up his suitcase for another batch of international dates.

Clash invited Hayes Carll to give us a few travel tips...

Best Trip…
I've had a lot of great travel experiences but my favourite at the moment was a recent vacation I took to Tulum Mexico. Most of my travel revolves around work of some kind so to be able to relax on a perfect beach and have drinks brought to me was a nice change of pace.

I also lived in Croatia for six months back in 2000 which was life changing.

Worst Trip…
I went to Norway for a festival about ten years ago. It took three flights, two airport changes, a fight with a pissed off customs agent, and a five hour ride on a bus where they played Norwegian covers of American country music. When we finally got to our destination it was a llama farm. The people were great but it I think it was the worst travel day I can remember.

My favourite foreign venue…
It's no longer around but I used to love The Luminaire in London.

We are surprisingly popular in…
Let me know where I'm popular and I'll probably be surprised.

Best or worst exotic foodstuff…
The most interesting individual I've met on the road… I've met more charachters than I can recall. I used to keep a journal of all the personalities I came across. But for the sake of time and name dropping I'll just say Robert Plant. Worst on-tour injury, accident or infection… We once had a young guy named Jake selling merch for us on tour. We had a gig at an Arts Center in Colorado that had formerly been a school. It had an asphalt basketball court in the back and the band decided to play a quick game before the show.

Jake was about 5'5 and I'm 6'3, but he was competitive and he made the mistake of trying to block my shot. He got tangled up with my guitar player and me and crashed hard on the asphalt breaking both of his hands. We took him to the emergency room after the show and where they put both his arms in casts. I sent him home on a flight to his mom before he had to use the restroom.

My essential travel item…
A solid sweatshirt to make a pillow out of. Whether its the plane, the van, or at the venue, any time I can grab some sleep I do.

My essential travel tip…
Pack light, carry some cash, and take in as much as you can. You never know when it might be the last or only time you get to be in that place.
