Primal Scream – 2013

"Television, propaganda..."

Primal Scream have two default settings.

The band are party animals, champion hedonists ready to dance on the barricades. Yet Primal Scream also have a harsh, uncompromising side – one that produces vital, politicised work such as 2000's 'XTRMNTR'.

Completing work on their new album, the group debuted lead single '2013' on 6Music this morning. The title is a nod towards The Stooges' habit of naming tracks after their year of composition, ensuring a vital sense of currency with their audience.

A juxtaposition of light, almost pop heavy music and some of their most paranoid, hard hitting lyrics yet, '2013' manages to meld together both sides of Primal Scream's personality.

Lyrically, Bobby Gillespie refuses to pull his punches as the track builds into a whirlwind of suspicion and agitation. Posting a video for the track online shortly after, the clip for '2013' contains sequin gimp masks, bondage, and psychiatric patients – amongst other strange, debauched goodies.

Watch it now.
