John Johanna likes to seclude himself away.
Living out in the rural Norfolk countryside, he sits and writes music to a natural, organic, unfiltered soundtrack of birdsong and rushing water.
Using only basic equipment – a few microphones, an reel-to-reel tape recorder – he crafts subtle folk-hewn pieces of whimsically poetic songwriting.
Comparisons could be made to Nick Drake's unadorned solo pieces, to the 60s folk boom and to more modern songwriters such as Devendra Banhart.
Really, though, John Johanna is existing in a carefree world of his own. New album 'I'll Be Ready When The Great Day Comes' is a striking piece of work, moving from the influence of 18th century church hymns through to Sufjan Stevens' conceptual work.
Clash is able to premiere new song 'Bound' and it's utterly heavenly, a beautifully balanced, fantastically sparse work.
Wholly natural and completely unadorned, it's really rather special. Tune in now.
'I'll Be Ready When The Great Day Comes' is set to be released on January 26th.
