Edinburgh’s Discopolis is one of those bands that's been on Clash's radar for some time.
The outfit's smooth synth-pop (think M83, Phoenix) has achieved recognition overseas, especially in Japan. But a mainstream breakthrough domestically has, as yet, eluded them.
That could change with ‘Falling (Committed To Sparkle Motion)’. The band’s latest cut comes with production from Axwell – previously one-third of the globe-conquering Swedish House Mafia – and is released through the DJ’s own Axtone imprint.
Axwell fell in love with Discopolis at first ‘sight’ – when he heard their material on the BBC’s Introducing strand. The act has since achieved airplay from the likes of Nick Grimshaw, Zane Lowe and Rob Da Bank: an upwards trajectory, then. Add to that supports with Friendly Fires, Metronomy and Simian Mobile Disco, and one can see that the only way for this lot is up.
Recently expanded to a four-piece, the extra pair of hands lending greater depth to their recordings, Discopolis could well find 2013 a very productive year indeed.
It takes but a single play for ‘Falling’’s hooks to bed in – and the Donnie Darko-inspired video is the icing on the proverbial cake. Watch it above, and look out for the track’s release in the coming weeks.
