There's only one Brian Chippendale.
Drummer / noise maker / bone rattler with Lightning Bolt, the percussionist also has his own solo venture. Black Pus have been skirting around the edges for a while now, with the moniker being used to label a series of releases marked more by extreme sludge than melody.
New album 'All My Relations' though, is somewhat of a breakthrough. Those corrosive, jagged edges are still there – let's face facts… they always will be – but Chippendale allows his pop fetish to bubble up to the surface.
Out on March 18th via Thrill Jockey, lead cut '1000 Years' has already emerged online. Sounding as if it was recorded at the bottom of a deep mine shaft, it's just over three minutes of brutal, uncompromising energy – with a pop cherry on top, for balance.
ClashMusic has gained the exclusive first play of the '1000 Years' video. A cheeky nod towards the pencil drawn cartoon we used to scribble at the bottom of our school books, the animated clip has the simplicity and subtle humour which are the hallmarks of Brian Chippendale's career.
Here's a quote from the drummer: "The flip books were drawn probably in 4th or 5th grade. There are nearly 1000 pages. The cover of the books usually said "adventurer" on them. Me and friends at the time all drew flipbooks. I remember sitting on the back porch of my house working on them."
Watch it now.
