An introspective return from the fascinating British electronic project...
'Othona'

Ever since quietly slimming down to two members, Dark Sky seem to have taken a more introspective approach to their music – perhaps only a natural response to such a shake-up.

On ‘Othona’, the duo appear to have found their feet – and confidence in expression – again. One of the great strengths of their act has always been in pulling together and melding a broad array of interest and influence. The effects of this brewing process are very much on show here – a couple of years spent honing a live show on the road has worked wonders.

The record is at its best when it’s off-kilter: weaving characteristic hardware bleeps and blips (remember ‘Ghost Note’?) in and out of crisp, carefully scattered percussion. The title track and ‘Cyan’ are both fine examples of this.

Some of the more ambient-leaning moments on the album see the pair in fine form, too. The drifting synths and use of field recording on ‘Angels’ are a particular highlight.

Considering Dark Sky have been around a good chunk of the last decade, it feels strange to describe this album as promising, but let’s bear in mind that this is only their second album. We’re looking forward to absorbing this one until number three comes along.
