Covering his 'mercury sound' period...
Bob Dylan

In considering the timeline of rock and roll and the most significant events that shaped and defined its development, the years 1965 and 1966 are especially important. An exploratory time, when bands were beginning to find themselves and prove their mettle through original songwriting, one man stood head, shoulders and straggly hair above everyone else.

Bob Dylan exploded from the Greenwich Village folk scene in the early-’60s, a phenomenon from his first recordings. He maintained the folk traditions while forging his own identity, emerging as a perceptive protest singer and being burdened with the ‘spokesman of a generation’ mantle, which never sat well with him.

By 1965, the visions he held for his music were rapidly expanding, influenced by the sounds he heard around him, and when he ‘went electric’ at Newport Folk Festival that July, it introduced a new, spiky sound, fed by Dylan’s restless determination and, perhaps, reflective of his current habits.

The albums that followed over the next year, ‘Bringing It All Back Home’, ‘Highway 61 Revisited’ and ‘Blonde On Blonde’ documented “that wild mercury sound” Dylan was forging, and the stunning evolution of him as an insightful, inquisitive and profound wordsmith.

It was in this time that songs such as ‘Subterranean Homesick Blues’, ‘Like A Rolling Stone’, ‘Visions Of Johanna’ and ‘Desolation Row’ shook the world off its axis. Individually they are staggering; together, the songs across these three albums represent the sheer size of the chasm that Dylan had traversed, putting himself miles ahead of and beyond reach of all his contemporaries.

‘The Cutting Edge 1965-1966: The Bootleg Series Vol. 12’ is the latest in Dylan’s string of alternative releases that raids his archives, and is set to offer a unique penetration of the progression achieved over the course of that prolific year.

The box-set, which collects unreleased early takes and alternate versions of these era-defining and historic recordings, reveals the different attempts made at now-classic songs, Dylan’s curious mind endlessly shifting, and the electrified charge of his unique creative process.

Available as a 6-CD anthology, there will also be a double-disc collection of highlights, a triple 12” vinyl alternative, or an 18-CD limited edition box for the serious collectors. ‘The Cutting Edge’ will be accompanied by a book featuring rare photos, and liner notes by Bill Flanagan and Sean Wilentz. It promises to be a fascinating listen – a glimpse into the exhilarating mind of a genius, and the glorious sound of mercury rising.
