Hackney Council Seek To Curb Late Licenses

Fans launch campaign against proposals...

The London borough of Hackney is one of the capital's most vibrant spots, boasting countless bars, venues and nightclubs.

However a proposed by-law from Hackney council could curb the area's nightlife. According to the proposal, bars would have to close at 11pm on weekdays and midnight on weekends – with nightclubs and music venues labelled as "inappropriate".

Emma Plouviez, chair of the council’s licensing committee, said: “The proposed changes to the licensing policy do not mean that we won’t grant new licenses. They provide guidelines intended to help secure well-managed, appropriate and attractive venues in all the different areas of Hackney.”

Fans have begun to campaign against the proposed by-law, and you can get involved HERE.

In response to the proposals, Phil Hutcheon, Founder and CEO of DICE, said:

"Hackney is one of the most vibrant cultural hubs in the UK. Its nightlife has given birth to a wealth of creatives, musicians and artists. The proposals the council have put forward are draconian. They don't account for the interests of the people who live and work here; people who have been drawn to the area precisely because of it's unique nightlife. It's not just license holders that will be affected, there'll be a knock on impact on other industries too. Companies like DICE wouldn't exist if it wasn't for the borough's thriving music scene."

Public consultation closes on August 14th.
