Damon Albarn Is Writing A Musical For Families

Songwriter is "trying to summon up the spirit of Lionel Bart..."

No stranger to the world of musical theatre, Damon Albarn's previous outings – 'Monkey: Journey To The West' and 'Dr Dee: An English Opera' respectively – have split audiences.

Well, he's not about to give up now. Speaking to the Daily Star just before his headline set at Latitude, Damon Albarn explained that he was writing a new musical aimed at families.

"It’s funny for me to say 'I’m writing a musical', but, yes, that’s what I’m doing next" he said. "It’s something I’ve always wanted to do because musicals are great when they’re done well."

The project has its roots in a proposed "left field, experimental opera", but quickly evolved into family friendly material.

Speaking to the tabloid, Albarn joked that he was "trying to summon up the spirit of Lionel Bart."

As yet, there's no word on a proposed opening date for the musical.
