Playlist: Woodes

"Songs to drive home and feel feelings to..."

Woodes is part of a new wave of pop energy in Melbourne.

The songwriter's new EP is a daring work, laced with potential and colour-soaked electronic grooves.

Out on October 28th, the material features guest contributions from LANKS, Golden Vessel and Simon Lam from Kllo.

With the EP on repeat in our office Clash invited Woodes to craft a new playlist, billed: "Songs to drive home and feel feelings to…"

This is a playlist of some of my favourite songs of the moment… a majority are from Australia (with the exception of Lapsley).

I find that when I’m looking for new artists, influences or people to work with, I am usually drawn to simplicity, well thought out production and great songwriting. The theme in most of these songs is that they are highly emotive & lyric driven..

I guess that’s what I look for too. Feelings are good for drives. Bonus points if it’s at night…

Kllo – 'Sense'

Kllo are one of my favourite duos in Australia right now. I feel like they’re soon to be house hold names (Although they should be already!) Two extremely humble people. Simon worked on ‘Rise’ with me and he has such a unique production style. Especially his treatment with cutting up vocals & wonky little synth lines. He’s also done a majority of the mixing and mastering on my EP.

April – 'Lanks' (ft. Airling)

This is one of my favourite songs of 2016! I’ve been waiting for it for a while, I remember when I first hung out with Will he sat and played it on his piano & told me the story behind it. The piano intro automatically took my mind to elsewhere. It’s such a strong riff that it could draw you in without production or other elements. The end is so uplifting in the recorded version. Love a good instrumental / 'Ahh…' build section. Will’s vocal tone, snare and the piano is so on point. Masterpiece. One to catch live…

Lapsley – 'Falling Short'

I remember hearing this track for the first time, falling for its simplicity. There was a week or two where I listened to it over and over, on loop. I love that Holly/Lapsley produces her own music. When I was getting more into beats it showed me the power of being minimal, if the song is strong enough. As a bonus, after seeing her live for the first time I fell more in love, as she’s really hilarious.

RY X – 'Only'

I listened to this on repeat when I was in LA. There’s something about RY that’s perfect for so many situations. I’ve been following his many projects for a while now and each new release accompanies a different pivotal moment. “I was only falling in love” with that piano chord really, really gets me.

Jack Grace – 'All Lost'

I’ve been a fan of Jack’s production and writing for a while now, this track is one of his best yet. It’s so relatable. "Please be happy… but please don’t tell me” is such a great line. I also love when he says ‘I’m a mess’ and the drums fade into the background. I find the structure really interesting, it’s great when you can create a loop based track that maintains interest… subtly building and subtracting layers. There’s a great live version of this floating around the internet of Jack performing in a church that’s well worth seeking out!

Armour – 'Lupa J'

Imogen (Lupa J) is one of my favourite Australian producer/vocalist/writers, I’ve been following her career for a number of years since she was an Triple J Unearthed High Finalist. I love her strings & vocal treatment in Armour. The sweeping string melody at 2:14 is huge. To me she’s a young artist that is extremely clear in her creative choices. Her production just keeps going from strength to strength. Recently she did her first remix, remixing my song ‘The Thaw’ and it was really cool to hear how she flipped it into her style.

Braille Face – 'Because'

Stunning. Braille face has crept into being one of my favourite artists of 2016. Not only is he one of the nicest humans out there, i’ve found his debut album ‘Koya’ to be an immaculately pieced together body of work. Luke Howard’s piano playing on ‘Because’ is the perfect compliment to this song, I’m fond of hearing the hammers and imperfections of the piano. It somehow feels both intimate and spacious. I saw the live/visual show for the first time at BigSound and looked around at an audience that was locked in, completely captivated.
